Understanding Elbow Pain – Causes, Types & Care at Rehab Chamber
Elbow pain refers to discomfort or irritation in the area where the upper arm bone (humerus) meets the two forearm bones (radius and ulna). It can arise from the joint itself, surrounding muscles, tendons, ligaments, or nerves.
Pain may develop gradually through overuse, or suddenly after a trauma like a fall or impact. While some cases resolve with rest, persistent or worsening pain may require care to restore function and prevent chronic issues.
1. Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)
Overuse of the wrist and forearm muscles can irritate the tendons on the outside of the elbow, causing sharp pain, weakness, and difficulty gripping.
2. Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)
This condition affects the inside of the elbow and is commonly caused by repetitive wrist flexion or lifting motions.
3. Nursemaid’s Elbow (Radial Head Subluxation)
Most common in toddlers, this occurs when the elbow joint slips out of place due to a sudden pull. Post-reduction rehab and parent education can help prevent recurrence.
4. Little League Elbow or medial epicondyle apophysitis
An overuse injury affecting the growth plate on the inner part of the elbow due to repeated throwing motions. It causes pain with throwing, decreased performance, and sometimes swelling or instability.
Often seen in: Baseball (especially pitchers), softball
5. Elbow Sprains & Ligament Injuries
Falls, impacts, or overextension can overstretch or tear elbow ligaments, leading to swelling, bruising, and instability.
6. Fractures & Post-Injury Rehab
Recovery after a break or dislocation may involve stiffness, scar tissue, and muscle compensation. Rehab supports mobility and strength restoration.
7. Nerve Entrapments (Cubital & Radial Tunnel)
Irritated nerves near the elbow can cause tingling, numbness, and pain into the forearm or hand. Examples include cubital tunnel and radial tunnel syndrome.
8. Bursitis (Olecranon Bursitis)
This condition causes swelling at the back of the elbow, often due to repetitive pressure or trauma.
9. Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI)
Long-term repetitive tasks—like typing, lifting, or using tools—can irritate muscles and tendons around the elbow.
10. Elbow Arthritis
Degenerative or inflammatory arthritis may lead to stiffness, swelling, and reduced range of motion in the elbow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Elbow Pain Treatment in Downtown Toronto
What causes elbow pain?
Elbow pain is often caused by tendon irritation (like tennis or golfer’s elbow), ligament strain, nerve entrapment, or repetitive stress. Poor posture and neck tension may also contribute.
How do I know if it’s tennis elbow or something else?
Tennis elbow typically causes pain on the outer part of the elbow during gripping or wrist extension. An assessment helps determine if it’s truly tendon-related or something deeper like nerve involvement.
Can elbow pain be treated without injections or surgery?
Yes. Many elbow conditions respond well to conservative treatment, including manual therapy, exercise, and education. We create plans based on your specific needs and goals.
Is my elbow pain coming from my neck?
Possibly. Cervical nerve irritation or referred muscular tension can create symptoms in the elbow. Our assessment includes screening for referred sources.
How long does elbow pain take to improve?
Recovery time depends on the cause and how long the pain has been present. Many people see improvement within a few weeks, though chronic conditions may require longer-term management.
No. You can book directly with one of our licensed healthcare practitioner for an initial consultation.
